SMGS are Senior Hurling Champions!!!!! 💪🏼

An unbelievably spirited team display saw SMGS win the Cork County Senior Hurling final played today against Carrigtwohill in Mayfield. SMGS played against a strong wind in the first half and went in 9 points down. An excellent Dan Twomey goal following a great run by Cathal Cronin, points from Twomey and Cathal McCarthy kept SMGS in touch after conceding a few soft goals. Craig Walsh, Cathal Hennessy and Paul Aherne hurled consistently well in defence to keep the deficit at 9 points while Felix Murphy won some great possessions in the forward line.

In the second half, SMGS showed great attitude in cutting the half time deficit. Ted Twomey who worked tirelessly all game and Joey O’Dwyer dominated at midfield, while up front, Cathal McCarthy, Luke Kendellan and Dan Twomey took some great scores. Kendellan scored an excellent goal after a great run from Twomey and with time running out and SMGS in arrears O’Dwyer blocked down his marker, burst through the Carrig defence and found Dan Twomey who struck the roof of the net. Carrigtwohill pointed a free to send the game to extra time.

In extra time, SMGS took control going two ahead early against a strong wind. Dan and Ted Twomey, Cathal McCarthy and Felix Murphy all contributed to the scoreboard and SMGS ran out deserving winners in a cracker of a game on a score line of 3.21 to 4.13.
