Promising start for First Year Girls Football

Our first year ladies football kicked off the season today where they took on local rivals from Coachford.

As it was a lot of the girls first time playing football together, it took awhile for them to gel and get their heads in the game.  S.M.G.S quickly discovered it was going to be a very tough game as a strong Coachford side found the back of the net 4 times in the first half. However, the Blarney girls didn't stop fighting and they too succeeded in rattling the net 3 times in the first thirty minutes.

The Blarney girls in true Blarney style, came out fighting the the second half and narrowed the large gap point by point. With Kelsey Cooper and Laura O' Sullivan in mid field an unstoppable duo, relaying balls to Megan O' Connor, Megan O' Shea and Alison O' Keeffe, all contributed greatly to S.M.G.S bringing the score difference to the narrowest of margins.

As the clock ticked and time was running out, S.M.G.S goal keeper Emma O'Connor and her superb backline continued to make crucial saves and blocks to ensure Coachford didn't pull away from them again.

In the final minutes of the game, Blarney managed to find the back of the net once more to secure the win. The final score was 7-11 to 7-08.

Congratulations to all players and trainers. A fantastic start to the year.

Best of luck to our Junior team who take on Regina Mundi, Monday the 8th in Nemo.
