The Mill Youth Cafe, Blarney

The Mill Youth Café seeks new volunteers

The Mill Youth Café has been operating out of its base in the Community Association building in Blarney for almost 10 years. It was originally set up by TY students in SMGS Blarney and has provided teenagers with a supervised and safe space to hang out with friends. Activities available include table tennis, pool, board games, X box and movie nights. The Café model differs from the more traditional youth club in that it is less structured with young people taking more responsibility for how they spend their time at the Café with the support of volunteers.

Volunteers make it possible for young people to socialise safely, try new things, make friends and have fun! We urgently need new volunteers this year or the Café will not open. We plan on opening to first and second year post primary students on Saturday nights from October to May from 7.30 to 9.30pm. You will be part of a rota and be expected to be available at least once a month to volunteer. In the past, volunteers have typically, but not exclusively, been parents of those attending the Café. This works well as parents get to know some of their teenager’s friends and hopefully the teenager gets to see their parents in a different light! Volunteers must be over 18 and Foroige will provide training, support and organise the required Garda vetting.

If you are interested, then please come along to our volunteer recruitment night in the Mill Youth Café on Wednesday September 25th from 8pm to 9pm. You will get to see the Café, meet some of the existing volunteers and meet with a Foroige youth worker. If you are unable to attend but are interested, then please private message Mill Youth Café Facebook page with your contact details.
