SMGS Soccer Update ⚽️
3 soccer teams have been in action for the school, competing in the Cork Cup with varying degrees of success.
The First Year team had a tough opening fixture against Douglas Community School, drawing 1-1 after extra time. Some strong penalties and a good save ensured they qualified for the last 16.
However, against a tough opponent in Spiorad Naoimh, the boys were beaten 4-2 despite giving their best efforts.
The U15s had a very difficult opening fixture against Presentation College, and despite some good efforts, our boys were beaten 3-1 by a team who could go on and win the tournament.
The U17s started off with a convincing win 5-1 over Carrigaline, which meant a quarter final against Rochestown, a school who have a very strong pedigree in soccer. After a difficult first 10 minutes, our boys totally dominated the rest of match, and were 5-0 up near the end of the second half. Despite conceding 3 late goals the result was never in doubt, and they now look forward to a semi-final in May.
